Who this is for
This page is for self-employed people trading in their own name across Birmingham: tradespeople, consultants, shop and market traders, creatives, drivers, therapists and everyone in between. It is for you whether you are in your first year and unsure what to keep, or several years in and simply want the return done without the January stress. If you would rather spend your time on the work than on wrestling with expenses and deadlines, this is aimed at you.
How we help sole traders
We keep the moving parts of a sole trader’s tax life in order and joined up. That means keeping your bookkeeping current so income and expenses are captured as you go, then turning that into an accurate Self Assessment return with the right allowances applied. We calculate any payments on account and flag them early, so a January bill is never a shock. Where your profits are growing, we can talk through the wider tax picture and whether a different structure would serve you better, without pushing you into paperwork you do not need.

Common questions we hear
The questions we hear most from sole traders are about expenses (what counts, what does not, and how to treat costs that are part business and part personal) and about that first payment on account, which catches many people out. Others are weighing up whether to stay as they are or become a limited company. We are glad to talk any of these through in plain terms, starting from your real figures rather than a generic rule of thumb.
Serving Birmingham and the Midlands
We look after sole traders throughout Birmingham and the surrounding Midlands, using secure cloud tools so you can send records and receipts without keeping paper or posting originals. It makes no difference where in the region you trade from, and we can arrange a call whenever you want to talk something over.
Common questions
Which expenses can I actually claim as a sole trader?
Broadly, costs incurred wholly and exclusively for the business: things like stock, tools, travel for work, and a fair proportion of costs where there is some personal use, such as a home office or a vehicle. The detail matters and getting it wrong cuts both ways. We review your actual costs and tell you what stands up rather than guessing.
Why have I suddenly been asked for a payment on account?
Once your tax bill passes a certain level, HMRC asks for advance instalments towards next year, usually due in January and July. A first full year can therefore feel like paying one and a half years at once. We calculate the payments, explain the timing early, and check whether a reduction is justified.
Do I need to register with HMRC, and when?
If your self-employed income goes over the small trading allowance you generally need to register for Self Assessment, and there is a deadline after the tax year in which you started. Leaving it late can mean penalties. We confirm whether you need to register and get it done properly.
How do I know when it's worth becoming a limited company?
It depends on your profits, how much you take out, the admin you are willing to take on and your plans for the business. There is no single tipping point. Incorporating brings extra filings as well as potential benefits. We look at your figures and set out the trade-offs so you can decide with the facts in front of you.
Do I have to use software to keep my records?
Not yet for everyone, but Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is extending digital record-keeping to many sole traders on a phased timetable. Getting onto tidy digital records now makes that transition painless. We can set you up on Making Tax Digital-ready software and show you how to keep it current.
