Who this service is for
This service is for directors of Birmingham and Midlands limited companies who need their statutory annual accounts and Company Tax Return prepared and filed correctly and on time. It suits owner-managed companies, contractors, family businesses and property companies alike, whether you keep tidy cloud bookkeeping or arrive with a shoebox of records at year end. It is equally suitable for companies that have not traded and need dormant-company accounts.
How we can help
We take responsibility for the whole year-end cycle so you are not left decoding Companies House and HMRC requirements yourself. Starting from your bookkeeping records, we build a set of accounts that stands up to scrutiny, prepare the Corporation Tax computations, and put both the Companies House accounts and the HMRC Company Tax Return in front of you for approval. Along the way we tell you what the numbers actually show about the business, so the accounts become a useful management tool rather than a compliance chore.
What’s included
- Statutory annual accounts prepared under the appropriate regime, including micro-entity and small-company considerations where you qualify
- A profit and loss account showing the year’s trading result
- A balance sheet setting out assets, liabilities and reserves at the year end
- Supporting notes and disclosures appropriate to your accounts
- Director approval process, so the accounts are formally signed off before filing
- Filing of the annual accounts with Companies House
- Corporation Tax computations and preparation of the Company Tax Return (CT600)
- Filing of the Company Tax Return with HMRC using suitable commercial software
- Dormant-company accounts where applicable
- A plain-English explanation of the results
- Identification of bookkeeping corrections needed before finalising
How it works
- We agree the scope and gather your accounting records for the year, whether from a cloud system or spreadsheets and paperwork.
- We review the records, identify any bookkeeping corrections and query anything that looks incomplete or unusual.
- We draft the annual accounts and prepare the Corporation Tax computations.
- We talk you through the figures, explain the tax position and answer your questions.
- Once you are happy, the director formally approves the accounts.
- We file the accounts with Companies House and submit the Company Tax Return to HMRC, then confirm your Corporation Tax payment deadline.
What we’ll need from you
- Access to your bookkeeping records or accounting software for the year
- Bank statements covering the accounting period
- Details of any loans, assets bought or sold, and hire-purchase or finance agreements
- Records of director transactions, including any amounts drawn or repaid
- Your company’s authentication details for Companies House and HMRC, or authority for us to act as your agent
- Answers to any queries we raise as we work through the records
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the Companies House accounts deadline with the HMRC tax return deadline. They differ, and so does the Corporation Tax payment date
- Leaving preparation until the final weeks, which removes any room to fix problems or plan for the tax bill
- Assuming a dormant company has nothing to file
- Treating the director’s loan account casually, when overdrawn balances can create additional tax charges
- Filing figures without understanding them, so avoidable errors in the underlying bookkeeping carry straight through to the accounts
Serving Birmingham and the Midlands
We work with limited companies across Birmingham and the wider Midlands using cloud accounting, so your records and draft accounts are available to review wherever you are, from Digbeth to Solihull. There is no need to post ledgers or drop in paperwork; where you would value a face-to-face conversation about your results, we arrange meetings to suit you.
Frequently asked questions
When are my company accounts and Company Tax Return due?
Annual accounts are normally due at Companies House nine months after your accounting year end, and your Company Tax Return is due to HMRC twelve months after the end of the accounting period it covers. Corporation Tax itself is usually payable earlier, nine months and one day after the period end. We track all of these dates for you so a filing deadline never arrives unexpectedly.
Do you file the accounts and the tax return in the same place?
No. They go to two different organisations. The annual accounts are filed with Companies House and the Company Tax Return (form CT600) with its computations is filed with HMRC. Since the previous joint HMRC and Companies House online filing service closed, the Company Tax Return has to be submitted using suitable commercial software, which we use on your behalf.
My company hasn't traded. Do I still need accounts?
Usually yes. A dormant company generally still has to file accounts with Companies House, though these are simpler than those for a trading company, and HMRC may also need to be told the company is dormant. We can prepare dormant-company accounts and confirm what, if anything, HMRC requires for your situation.
Can you work as a micro-entity or small company?
If your company meets the qualifying size conditions, it may be able to prepare accounts under the micro-entity or small-company regime, which allows reduced disclosures. We assess which regime fits your company and prepare accounts accordingly, explaining the trade-offs so you can decide.
Is preparing our accounts the same as an audit?
No. Preparing and filing your annual accounts is an accounts-preparation service, not a statutory audit, and we do not provide an audit opinion. If your company is legally required to have an audit, we will tell you and can help you find a registered auditor.
